 The Kingdom attend the 2nd meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia attended the second meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency in the Austrian capital Vienna which was held during the period 27-28 Muharram 1436H corresponding to 20-21 November 2014G. Dr. Waleed Hussain Abu Elfaraj, Deputy President of King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (K.A.CARE) represented the Kingdom in this meeting in his capacity as governor. It is noteworthy to mention that many hot topics in the global arena in the field of nuclear uses in several states were discussed. Dr. Abu Elfaraj delivered a speech in which he conveyed the Kingdom’s gratitude and appreciation of the Boards efforts valuing its hard work for the sake of achieving global safety while using nuclear energy. At the conclusion of his speech he praised the initiatives carried by the Council and the efforts and the work of those who support it hoping achievement of more sustainment and successful initiatives in serving the Kingdom’s ambitious program in the field of peaceful nuclear energy. Several important topics were discussed, most notably the technical report of the Commission of Assistance and Cooperation, the subject of civil responsibility for nuclear damage and elimination of the small quantities of nuclear material from the applications of Vienna Accord, then came the application of safeguards in the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea, also was discussed the implementation of the safeguards accord concluded by virtue of non-proliferation Treaty and the relevant provisions set forth in the UN Security Council resolutions regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran as well as the implementation of the guarantees agreement concluded by virtue of non-proliferation treaty in the Syrian Arab Republic. It should be noted that this is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia second participation in the Board after it was elected to the membership of the Council in its first session last September. The Board of Governors in the international agency for atomic energy is considered the agency’s most important organ in drafting resolutions and designing strategic goals and policies for the agency, also the board of governors is the legislative, supervisory and executive arm of the agency’s works. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is considered among the active and effective states in the scopes of the agency’s works as Saudi Arabia has assumed, represented by K.A. CARE, the presidency of the Committee of the Whole of the general annual conference for atomic energy agency for the year 2012, also the membership of the Board of Governors of the International Agency for Atomic Energy during the period (2011-2012).
It is noteworthy to highlight that K.A. CARE endeavors to build a sustainable future for energy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through enlisting the sources of atomic and renewable energy amongst the domestic energy system, the City also seeks to make development in the sources of future energy a new opportunity to develop the capabilities of specialized Saudis and upgrade their skills and save the valued jobs for them and for the coming generations.
