K.A.CARE and the Korean Nuclear Energy Research Institute signed cooperation contracts for the establishment of “ partnership in the technology of the reactor of small compact units SMART and human building in K.A.CARE headquarter in Riyadh. Agreements were signed in the presence of the President of K.A.CARE Dr. Hashim Yamani and a group of experts in the nuclear field in addition to the President of the Korean Nuclear Energy Research Institute and a high ranking delegation from the Korean side. Agreements were signed by the Vice President of K.A.CARE Dr. Waleed AbulFaraj and the President of the Korean Nuclear Energy Research Institute.
These contracts come as a package based on the joint bilateral agreement signed in 2011G between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the South Korea in the scope of development and implementation of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and the memorandum of understanding signed in the presence of his majesty King Salman Bin Abdulaziz and her excellency the President of the Korean Republic Mrs.Park Geun-hye with the Ministry of Science and Information Technology and Communication and the Future Planning for the South Korean Republic with respect to the peaceful nuclear cooperation which includes the cooperation programs related to “Establishment of partnership in the technology of the reactor of small compact units” and building joint human nuclear capacity and academic researches” in Riyadh in March 2015.
These contracts aim at achieving actual partnership to establish an infrastructure knowledge in the scopes of the techniques of small Korean compact reactor SMART, as follows:
1- Cooperation and joint construction in designing the core of SMART reactor
2- Cooperation and joint construction in the fluid system design of SMART technology
3- Cooperation and joint construction in the mechanical design of SMART technology
4- Cooperation and joint construction for the design of interaction between the machine and the user of Cooperation and joint construction.
5- Cooperation and joint construction in Safety Analysis of Cooperation and joint construction
The technology of the reactor of small compact units SMART is considered one of the very modern techniques of the 4th generation in the scopes of nuclear reactors which are distinguished for being of multiple applications from the point of electricity production and refractory products, in addition to its high safety standards, and the ease of manufacture and construction and then the easiness of getting it into the electrical grid.
It is noteworthy to mention that cooperation with the Republic of Korea in the scope of atomic energy falls within many paths that all pour within the frame work of native human capacity building in the Kingdom and localization the industry chain and transfer of technology, knowing that the Korean Institute for nuclear research has formed the basis on which the Korean Republic built its current nuclear capabilities, and it holds the primary responsibility for localizing this technique and transferring it to South Korea.
The Kingdom’s efforts through K.A.CARE comes as an assurance of the importance of utilizing alternative sources for generating electricity, water desalination through the uses of atomic and renewable energy for the sake of maintaining its hydrocarbon resources for the coming generations or avail it for export or as inputs for industry. Also, it will furnish investment and employment opportunities through localization of alternative energy industries in the Kingdom.
