King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy was established in response to the Royal Decree A/35 of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may he rest in peace, dated 3 Jumada Al-Awwal 1431 (corresponding to 17 April 2010), with the aim of building a sustainable future for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by incorporating atomic and renewable energy sources into the local energy ecosystem. It is known that the Kingdom is witnessing rapid population growth, which has created an increasing demand for depleting hydrocarbon resources that will continue to be needed. Therefore, it is essential to start using alternative, sustainable, and reliable sources to generate electricity and produce desalinated water, which in turn will reduce consumption of national fossil fuel reserves and the emission of greenhouse gases. Thus, it provides additional security for the production of water and electricity in the future while simultaneously conserving hydrocarbon resources, which will prolong their life and keep them as sources of income for a longer period. It has also been found that a balanced energy mix of alternative and traditional energy is strategically important in the long term to ensure prosperity and energy security and maintain the Kingdom's leading role in the global energy market. Based on the precise technical and economic analysis, the decision was made to include atomic and renewable energy as essential parts of the future energy mix in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Both the government and private sectors will contribute to providing the required capacity for power generation, harnessing advanced and safe technologies and utilizing resources efficiently in accordance with the highest safety standards and best international practices, and in line with international agreements and treaties. By implementing this decision, the Kingdom will be able to increase the demand for energy and desalinated water while ensuring the continued growth of national development rates. This is because developing such alternative energy sources places the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia among the top countries in developing and utilizing atomic and renewable energy. This development in future energy sources will create new opportunities for citizens to develop their capabilities and skills and provide high-value jobs for them, their children, and future generations. Additionally, developing these sources will create promising investment opportunities for local and international private sector companies.
